Survey from the earliest human presence in the Mediterranean to the end of the Roman Empire (c. 200,000 BCE―476 CE). For prehistoric times, emphasis on material remains and anthropological theory used to recreate the cultures of the Minoans, Mycenaeans, Dark Age Greeks, and Etruscans. For the historical Greek and Roman periods, emphasis on developments in architecture, sculpture, vase painting, wall painting, mosaics, and minor arts. Relationship of art to society.
