Fundamental electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of solid state materials. Basic bonding and crystallography correlations to electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of materials. Specific subjects that will be covered include wave properties of electrons, Schrodinger's equation, energy bands in crystals, electrical conduction in metals and semiconductors, classical and quantum mechanical treatments of optical properties, and magnetic phenomena. (RE) Prerequisite(s): MSE 201 or MSE 207 or PHYS 232* or PHYS 250.
