A survey of the history of sub-Saharan Africa to the beginning of the nineteenth century. Topics will include social structures and economic systems; culture and technology; kingdoms and state formation; impacts of Islam and Christianity in Africa; African participation in regional and world trade networks; slavery and the global slave trade; and the early European presence in Africa. Prerequisite or corequisite: ENGL 1010, or ENGL 1011, or ENGL 1020, or HIST 2100, or UHON 1010, or department head approval.
