Prerequisites: ENGL 1020. Offers a historical survey and selection of global cinema from the 1890s to about 1960, covering all modes of cinema, including narrative, documentary, and experimental films and their hybrids. Cautioning against a simple understanding of cinema history as a history of technological progress, the course explores a variety of ways in which global filmmakers developed different ways of telling stories visually.
