ARTH 4030 - ST:Donatello & Renaissance Art

Institution:
University of Memphis
Subject:
Art History
Description:
This course on the Italian Renaissance sculptor, Donatello, takes place at an extraordinary moment, as three exhibits in major European Museums—in Florence, Berlin, and London—focus specifically on the artist. Each venue will display a different combination of works and provide a unique interpretation of the artist. This seminar-style class will explore topics both old and new having to do with Donatello, including controversies, new discoveries, attributions, interpretations, lingering mysteries, and the enduring impact of the artist. Class will require frequent student presentations, scholarly readings, and delivery of a final conference-style lecture. Students will also engage with questions of methodology and how one comes to understand the nature of art and art history.
