(was 4322) A sweeping history of the city of Rome and its empire from foundation to the edge of decline and fall, c. 500 CE. Some dominant themes include Rome’s conquest of Italy, the development of representative government, Mediterranean dominance, and the structures of the city’s vast empire. Although Rome’s state frames this course, careful attention will be given to the social and cultural life it engendered, with a focus on the Roman family, religious currents, and the impact of its colonial project.
