Survey course aimed primarily at students interested in careers in nursing and the allied health sciences. Introduces the biology of bacteria and viruses from a public health perspective that emphasizes nosocomial infections and infection control. Covers microbial classification, morphology, growth, reproduction, metabolism, and genetics in comparison with the same processes in multicellular eukaryotes. Students will learn how infectious diseases are caused and how they are transmitted, in order to understand how they are treated and controlled. In the laboratory, students will learn how to isolate, culture, and identify bacteria. They will also investigate microbiological phenomena such as antibiotic resistance, disinfection, and viral infection. This course includes three (3) hours of lecture and three (3) hours of laboratory each week. Course fee applies. Prerequisite: C- or better in BIO 111 (B- or better recommended for Nursing students).
