This course explores the cross-cultural influences within religious art of the Middle Ages from the fall of Rome to the rise of Protestantism (ca 500 - 1500 CE). While focusing on Christian art in Europe, we will also investigate the intersections of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, considering the ways these faiths are expressed in architecture, sculpture, manuscripts, textiles, and paintings in Europe and the Near East.
