This course is designed to prepare the student to assume the role of the Emergency Medical Responder whose primary focus is to initiate immediate lifesaving care to critical patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide lifesaving interventions while awaiting additional EMS response and to assist higher level personnel at the scene as well as during transport. Emergency Medical Responders function under medical oversight as part of a comprehensive EMS response, performing basic interventions with minimal equipment. Upon successful completion, the student may apply to the Tennessee Department of Health, Division of Emergency Medical Services to take the certification examination for Emergency Medical Responders.Prerequisite: Must be seventeen years of age before the end of the course.
