      This Course introduces the philosophy and central competiencies of the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing. The central competien flow from the philosophy and organizational framework and are the basis for theory skills, and clinical experiences. The focus is on nursing as a discipline; the nursing process; the person as a psychosocial, spirtual, cultural being; health promotion; environmental safety; and communication.

The student is introduced to essential life functions including: protective, comfort/rest, activity/mobility; nutrition, elimination, fluid/gas transport. the focus is on nursing, the nursing process with emphasis on assesment, the client with normal or variations of normal functions, health promotion, environment, and communication. Basic mangement principles are introduced to assist the student organize client care.

      This course applies the nursing process to promote, maintain and restore opimum health for diverse clients experiencing alterations and variations in psychosocial-cultural life functions. The course is structured around eight core competencies applied to clients with mental health. Empasis is on health promotion, therapeutic communication and legal-ethical aspects of mental health nursing.

The student's use of core concepts and competiencies is expanded to include nursing care of obstetrical and newborn client from diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences. The course is evolved around nursing, nursing process, and obstetrical and newborn clients experiencing variations and alterations in life functions: fluid/gas transport, elimination, nutritional/metabolism, genitourinary, sensory, activity, and safety. Health promotion, communication, and legal/ethical aspects of obstetrical nursing care are also explored.

The student will implement plans of care nursing process, and obstetrical and newborn clients experiencing variations and altterations in life functions in a variety of clinical settings where permitted. Health promotion, communication, and legal/ethical aspects of obstetrical nursing care are also empasized.

      With a continued emphasis on assesment, the focus of this is on planning, implementing and evaluating strategies to promote, maintain and restore optimum health for pediatric clients from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds experiencing variations and alterations in life functions. The course evolves around nursing, nursing process, and pediatric clients experiencing variations and alterations in specified life funtions: fluid-gas transport, elimination, nutritional/metabolism, genitourinary sensory, activity and protective. Health promotion, legal/ethical issues, therapeutic communication techniques, and management strategies specific to the care of the pediatric client are incorporated into plan of care for pediatric clients.
