Production of energy-rich molecules in the cell is linked to important cellular functions (i.e., biosynthesis, movement, and transport). Three hours lecture per week.

The theory and use of lab instruments and techniques will be introduced through a series of experiments designed to investigate photosynthesis, electron transport, polymerase chain reactions, and enzyme kinetics. Experiment planning and interpretation of data generated by the students will culminate in journal-style reports. One four-hour lab per week.

Major emphases are experimental design, data collection, statistical analyses, graphical representations of results, and creation of oral and written scientific reports. Topics may include circadian rhythm control of physiology and behavior, environmental factors influencing aggression, the influence of predation cues on behavior, and the effects of temperature and salinity on the behavior and physiology of fresh-water clams. Course is 4 hours credit (2 hours lecture/discussion plus 4 hours lab per week).
