Topics will include the growth of indigenous empires in southern and West Africa; developments in family and communal life; impact of foreign traders, explorers, and missionaries and African responses to their presence; European colonial rule; African nationalist movements and independence; the Cold War; post-colonial social change; wars and failed states; current African trends and developments.
