Discussions include standards-based lesson design; various teaching methods designed to meet instructional goals; behavior management strategies; and learner goals. The course emphasizes lesson planning and assessment of student learning. Students develop and teach five inquiry-based lessons, three to students in middle grades and two to students in grades three through five, all in local elementary and middle schools, and participate in peer coaching. Every semester. Field component. No credit toward Education degree. Prerequisite: Junior or Senior standing and approval of Co-Director. No credit in STEM 1030 after satisfactory completion of both STEM 1010 and 1020.

    Course introduces the teacher candidate to the psychological foundations of educational theory and practice especially as it applies to the teaching of mathematics and science. Topics include learning theories and the contributions of leaders in the field of knowing and learning, learner characteristics and diversity, intelligence, motivation, and various models of teaching math and science for all learners. It offers a broad base of content focused on human learning as well as a more in-depth look at how students learn and retain concepts in mathematics and science. Prerequisites: Admission to the STEM Education program; university, STEM and major department grade point averages of at least 2.75; STEM 1030 with a minimum grade of C or STEM Education Director approval.

  • STEM 3010: Perspectives on Science and Mathematics

    Introduction to the historical, social and philosophical implications of the nature of science/mathematics and how to integrate this information into the curriculum to enhance learning. Emphasis will be placed on assessment techniques and developmentally appropriate strategies and materials. Classroom diagnostic and prescriptive teaching; linking secondary science and mathematics, assessment, decision-making and instruction; in-depth study of selected assessment instruments, instructional strategies, materials, and management procedures in science and mathematics education. Students are also expected to demonstrate a vision of scientific literacy that connects theory to practice. Every semester. University, STEM, and major department grade point averages of at least 2.75; ENGL 1020 or UHON 1020 and completion of all 1000-level major courses with a minimum grade of C; STEM 2020 with a minimum grade of C or STEM Education program Co-Director approval. Admission to the STEM Education program.
