The aim of the course is to provide a background and develop academic discursive competence in the aesthetics and history of film. Students will learn to recognize and analyze the formal aspects of narrative and cinematography within particular cultural and historical contexts. Students will develop their critical and aesthetic faculties through daily active participation in class discussion as well as a semester-long research projectgrounded in aesthetic theory and history, providing students the oppurtunity to practice critical thinking, reading, and writing skills, as well as oral argument and the analysis (and creation of) academically rigorous prose.
