Despite increasing efforts to acknowledge and eradicate prejudice and discrimination in our society, the United States has yet to achieve equality in respect, treatment, and social opportunities given to many groups across race/ethnicity, sexuality and gender identity, ability, socioeconomic status, age, and other identities as well as intersectional identities. From a social psychology perspective, this course will examine the causes and consequences of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination, in their many forms. This course will apply empirical research and psychological theory to understand the ways in which stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination can be automatic, how they are maintained, and how they can be examined, addressed, and reduced.
