The course introduces students to the field of demography: the scientific study of human populations. Specifically, lectures and assignments will focus on the size, change, composition, and distribution of populations and how these four dimensions are influenced by demographic processes: fertility, mortality, and migration. The Society component of the course implies that we will go beyond a simple description of demographic processes to examine how demographic processes vary by age, gender, race/ethnicity, social class, and other social characteristics.
