      This section will allow the student to integrate pathophysiological trauma principles and assessment findings into an ability to formulate a general field impression and implement a patient treatment plan. Topics include trauma systems, mechanism of injury, hemorrhage, shock, soft tissue trauma, burns, head and facial trauma, spinal trauma, thoracic trauma, abdominal trauma, and musculoskeletal trauma. Participants must have a “C” or better to progress in each Paramedic course and to successfully complete the program of study.       Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support concepts to the Standards of the American College of Surgeons will be presented and upon successful completion of this portion of course the PHTLS certificate will be awarded. Other topics to be covered will include neonatology, patients with special challenges, and care of chronic care patients. Successful completion of the neonatology portion of this course according to the AAP guidelines will result in the awarding of an NRP certificate. Participants must have a “C” or better to progress in each Paramedic course and to successfully complete the program of study.       This course is a field internship meant to allow the student to perform skills and practice emergency medicine theories learned while in the classroom, laboratory, and other clinical settings. This experience must be conducted under the direction of a licensed EMT-Paramedic preceptor or a course instructor. Under supervision, the student will be exposed to injuries and illnesses and will participate in the diagnosis and treatment of these patients while working in an environment approximating that found upon graduation. The intern will at this point have progressed from observer to team member as well have leadership role opportunities as a pre-hospital provider. This course requires a total of 240 clinical hours. An (8hr) clinical with the program medical director will be included in this time as well. Participants must have a “C” or better to progress in each Paramedic course and to successfully complete the program of study.       This course will offer the student the opportunity to intern with a community Emergency Medical Services (EMS) leader. Depending on the student’s professional goals, either an EMS educator or EMS director track will be chosen. The majority of the student’s time will be spent with an approved preceptor in the chosen field; however, conferences, projects, and evaluations will be held with a MSCC EMS instructor at various times throughout the semester.45 total contact hours over the semesterPre-requisites: Current and unencumbered Paramedic license

      A course designed to improve each student’s level of cardiovascular fitness without the possible risks sometimes associated with higher intensity exercise. The ROCKPORT FITNESS WALKING TEST will be utilized in order to design individualized walking programs based on existing levels of cardiovascular fitness.
