  This course is a survey of the musics and music cultures of the world, focusing on those distinct from the Western European tradition. The course will serve as an introduction to the discipline of ethnomusicology, the study of music in the context of culture as it exists anywhere in the world. By investigating the music of a variety of the world's cultures, and how it reflects and shapes the cultures of which they are a part, students will have opportunities to reflect upon views of the world that may be different than their own.

Students will discover through analysis how composers have scored for these instruments and learn to apply basic principles of instrumentation. The snare drum will provide a platform for learning the traditional rudimental style of drumming. Emphasis will be placed on strengthening the student's reading and performance of rhythmic notation. The trumpet and trombone will be the main instruments of study in the brass family.
