The Source of

Black Excellence

LeMoyne-Owen College has stood as a beacon of the community as Memphis’ only Historically Black College and University for 160 years. In 1862, the college was founded as Lincoln School, which later became LeMoyne Normal and Commercial School. LeMoyne College would later merge with S.A. Owen Junior College in 1968. Decades later, LOC continues to advance in the community and beyond by exploring its magical opportunities in leadership and innovation.

It’s an exciting time to be a LeMoyne-Owen College Magician. As the momentum surrounding LOC continues to grow, the world realizes what faculty, staff, and alumni have always known: LOC is a magical community of diverse leaders prepared for success locally, nationally, and globally.

In '69, she enrolled at LeMoyne-Owen but life took her on a different path, including marrying her sweetheart Sherman in the LOC's Student Center! Fifty years later, at 75, she surprised her family by revealing she'd finished her degree in Fall 2023.

Among the distinguished graduates is Khalif Patterson, whose journey from Jacksonville, Florida, to Memphis, Tennessee, is marked by outstanding achievements and contributions. A graduate of Southwind High School, Patterson entered LeMoyne-Owen College amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in the fall of 2020. Not only did Patterson maintain an exceptional grade point average resulting in Magna Cum Laude honors, but he also achieved the distinction of becoming the first person to officially commission as an Active-duty Officer from LeMoyne-Owen College. Patterson, soon to be Lieutenant Khalif Patterson, is set to embark on his military service, departing for Germany on May 28th, further exemplifying the spirit of excellence and service instilled by LeMoyne-Owen College. #LOCGRAD24 #TheSource #BlackExcellence #MagicianPride

HISTORY AND CAMPUS

LeMoyne-Owen College is a survivor — transcending the eras of race riots, yellow fever epidemics, Jim Crow laws and segregation in Memphis. We have stood the test of time and inspired countless students to change their lives.

Today, we are Memphis’ only historically black college. We stand prepared to continue our legacy and mission of educating and developing leaders.
